Too many guinea pigs in Australia live in cages that are far too small, often because the cage was sold as "suitable for guinea pigs".
guineapigcage.com.au is an independent Australian site with one goal: to help owners give their guinea pigs a home with enough room to run, hide, graze and "popcorn".
We turn published welfare guidance, especially RSPCA Australia's recommendations, into practical measurements, layouts and checklists for Australian homes and Australian weather.

Why are pet-shop cages often too small?expand_more
Many are designed to fit shop shelves and delivery boxes, not guinea pigs. A typical pet-shop cage gives about 0.5 m² of floor, roughly half of RSPCA Australia's guidance of about 1 m² for a pair.
Is an outdoor hutch safe in an Australian summer?expand_more
It can be, with full shade, predator-proofing and a plan to bring your guinea pigs inside on hot days. RSPCA Australia notes heat stress can occur from 24°C. See our summer heat guide.
Can a guinea pig live alone?expand_more
Guinea pigs are herd animals, and RSPCA Australia recommends keeping them with at least one other guinea pig. They should not be housed with rabbits.
What size cage do two guinea pigs need?expand_more
At least 1 m² of flat floor, such as a 2 × 4 grid C&C cage (about 71 × 142 cm). Use our size calculator for other group sizes.
